Forest Alerts

The alerts are displayed on a calendar based on the date the tree cover change was first detected. The color increases in intensity with the area in hectares detected on that day.

Click on a day to view the alerts for that day.

The download button in the bottom will download a GeoJSON file of the alert areas.

Using the Map

By default the map will show the alert layers (Deforestation and/or Fires) for the current calendar year. Use the switches above the results on the right to activate or deactivate datasets in the map.

Map Interaction

Zoom in or out using the + and - buttons on the map, or by using the scroll of your mouse or track pad. Double clicking on the map will zoom the map in on that location.

Move the map by left clicking on the map and dragging the map.

Advanced Map Features

Forest Report Area maps are powered by MapHubs mapping software and include a number of additional features.

To access advanced map features click on the tools icon in the top-right of the map. A menu will open from the right side of the screen.

Base maps

Select from a range of base map options including light (the default) and dark base maps, street maps, terrain maps, and satellite imagery base maps.

Satellite imagery base maps may be limited depending on the region and the data is often several years old. See Creating a Report

Measurement Tools

The measurement tools allow you to measure area or distance by drawing on the map. First use the switch to activate the tool. New icons will appear on the right of the map.

Select the line icon to draw a line to measure distance. You can draw multiple line segments if needed and the tool will display the total at the top of the map.

Similarly, select the area tool to measure an area by tracing the extent of the area. Click once on the map to draw a new vertex of the polygon. Double click to complete the polygon. You can draw multiple areas. The display at the top the map will provide the total for all areas drawn.

Click the close button on the right of the map to deactivate the tool.

Travel Time (experimental)

The Travel Time tool uses OpenStreetMap road network data to estimate how long it would take to travel to/from the selected location to areas of the map. This can help, for example, for investigating the likely supply range of a palm oil mill.

This tool is experimental. The OpenStreetMap data is incomplete or out of date in many areas especially if roads were recently developed. You may want to consider improving OpenStreetMap by tracing new roads on satellite imagery. Once the roads are added to OSM they will begin to show in this tool’s analysis within 24-48 hours.

This tool is also not necessarily adjusting travel times for local speeds of roads or the speeds of different vehicles. It is only a rough estimate.

Reordering Layers

If you want to view several map layers from different datasets it may help to move one above the other. Click the gear icon in the map legend to open the map layers menu. The menu will display from the right side of the screen. Drag and drop the layers up or down to reorder the map layers. When down click the close icon to close the menu.
